The Nintendo Switch offers users the ability to use several different types of controllers, such as Joy-Cons, Pro Controllers, wireless remotes, and traditional wired controllers. Each controller has unique features that either make connectivity easier based on players' preferences or enhance gameplay. For example, while Joy-Cons, Pro Controllers, and wireless controllers offer connectivity from longer distances, wired controllers provide users with a physical connection. Furthermore, Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers include an NFC (near-field communication) touchpoint that allows players to use Amiibo cards and figures for additional in-game content. All of these controllers are connected to the Switch using various methods.

To access the controller settings, click on the circular icon denoted by a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controller located at the bottom of the Switch's home screen. This button will have the word "Controller" underneath it. Once pressed, users will have three options to choose from: change the grip/order of their remotes, find controllers or pair new controllers. The first option will allow users to select the player order. For example, the first individual to connect their controller will be "Player 1." The second option will connect already paired controllers to the console. The third option will pair new controllers to the Switch. Additionally, this option guides users on how to pair controllers with the aid of animations. A more in-depth guide can be referenced on the official Nintendo website.

How to Connect Nintendo Switch Controllers

Left, Blue and Right, Red Joy-Con Controllers

Joy-Cons can be connected to the Switch by sliding them into the slots on the console's sides. Then, pressing "L" and "R," which are located on top of the controller, registers the controllers to the console. When splitting the Joy-Cons into two controllers, users must access the option that says "Change Grip/Order" before holding the SYNC button, which is a small button located inside the controller.

Pro Controllers and wireless controllers are connected by holding the SYNC button located on top of the controller. Wired controllers are connected using a Micro-USB C to USB cable. The Micro-USB C plug will be inserted into the top of the controller while the other end will be inserted into the USB port on either the back or side of the dock. It is important to note that wired controllers can only be used while using the Switch in docked mode. Pressing "L" and "R" will register the controller to the Switch for both methods.

When waking up the Switch from sleep mode, pressing "L" and "R" on any type of remote will automatically connect them if they have already been paired. Disconnecting Switch controllers is very similar to the method utilized when connecting them. Simply press the SYNC button to disconnect the Switch controller with which the Nintendo Switch is paired.
